The Problem
There is a lack of understanding today about how to build biblical relationships with one another. We can look at certain passages in Scripture that give examples of good relationships, but those narrative passages do not give adequate insight into how Christians today can build godly relationships with one another. For example, one can read the book of Ruth and see the great relationship Ruth had with her mother-in-law, Naomi, but those four chapters alone do not teach how to develop biblical relationships. First Samuel 18 shows a beautiful picture of a loving friendship between two men, Jonathan and David. But again, Christians are left with little instruction on how to develop a biblical relationship with one another. Even the Gospel accounts of Jesus and His disciples show a picture of what He did and said while with the disciples, but again, we are not given specific instruction on how to build Christian relationships. Jesus gives an “example” for His disciples to follow in John 13 (the washing of the disciples’ feet), but that is just one example and thus does not fully disclose the how-tos of a relationship.
